That reminds me.

[ John slides some of her mail over to her -- which mainly consists of liquor stores catalogs, Pottery Barn (don't ask), and a whole crap load of useless junk mail -- and she gathers it all up into one sloppy pile, setting it off to the side. In return she reaches into her own coat pockets and hands him a few magazines and his catalogs of interest. ]

I got these a few days ago.

[ Same old same old. But that wasn't the interesting mail she was concerned about. No, the envelope he pulls out with the threats... that could be for either of them, was what really caught her attention. This is what happens when two detectives in the same area share similar names. Great. More shit from random, or not so random, people -- and they couldn't even be bothered to pull away from the classics and try something new.

She takes the letter to get a closer look at it, furrowing a brow. She's really trying to figure out who she could have pissed off lately this time, it happens a lot. Or maybe he pissed someone off this time.

John. When did you get this? Did it come today?

[ J’onn stacks the issues of Cat People, Twins and Fire Engineering neatly and presses them beneath the greater weight of a 1950s retro style fashion catalogue. Even with his or her or both their lives in danger, there's time for neatness.

He spares a glance at his watch before answering. ]

One hour and forty-three minutes ago. I decided not to tell you before you got here- if your behaviour changed and you were the target, it might spook them.

[ And say what you will about old stone face Jones, stoic he may be, overly logical, but anyone who has seen him work knows he cares. He doesn't want anyone hurt. But still, tactical enough, he might have decided having a bulletproof woman nearby if he's the target is a good idea... That he's bulletproof, too, being a secret. ]

I've scanned it for prints, looked for hair... Nothing. Maybe they aren't original, but they aren't completely stupid.

[ He does have a point. Though she's not sure how much her behavior would've changed in regards to knowing beforehand. It's hard for her to move away from her cynical attitude unless a certain purple person is involved.

Which obviously isn't the case this time around. Thank fucking god.

No. No, this time she thinks it's just an angry ~~weirdo~~ rando with something to prove. Call it a hunch. ]

We can still try to narrow it down. I mean... it probably shouldn't be too hard to figure out, right? [ Maybe. She takes another sip from her coffee, obverses the letter once more, and slides it back over to him so he can take a look at it again if he wanted to. ] Have you had any disgruntled clients lately? Or maybe people associate with them? I can think of a few on my end.

[ Jessica at least feels the same way he does. She does care despite not showing it all that well and, well... she wont admit it out loud -- but she does respect her last name sharing counterpart.

Which means no matter who the target is, having them stick close together is all for the better. ]

Whoever this might be is surely going to be caring a gun around with them.

[ J'onn has quite the broad selection of potential enemies of his own. Some he can dismiss out of hand, because they're alien conquerors, or the psychic remnants of murdered teenagers, or other such horrors. It, sadly, does not narrow it down much. ]

If it is intended for me, 'lately' isn't a necessity... Considering the method, I wonder if it was someone I put away when I was still on the force.

[ He's never explained why such a straight-laced by the book guy like him is no longer a police detective. Especially when he's still occasionally hired by the police. It's one of those subjects that doesn't come up, like why she's not a superhero anymore. Of course, he doesn't mention he also used to be a superhero either. It's been a long time since the Bronze Wraith fought crime in the sun, and he contents himself with his detective work and saving the world in the shadows when needed. ]

Precisely what I was thinking, a gun at minimum. That is why I want to hire you to find them. [ He pauses for a moment, drinking his coffee- he's been here longer, and he finishes it. ] I suggest you hire me to find them and we call it quits.

[ Extending a hand across the table, he offers to shake and seal the deal. His human form is only slightly smaller than his massive Martian appearance, barely shy of 7' and with a hand fit for a gorilla. He still makes sure to hide that he could crush a car like a coke can. As for the gesture? It's technically meaningless. But it's also a semi-official way to agree to... what's the best way to put it... get the job done. Make it a job. Better, make it a duty. And say whatever you want about John Jones, but he's honourable enough to do his duty if it kills him.

And also, it's just kinda funny, right? ]
