[Although it obviously goes unheard, he can't help but snort at that slang. It's the kind of rallying cry he'd expect from his students.]

Perhaps there is some truth that having idealistic goals enables us to work harder than we would for more selfish reasons. Although that's only so long as those of us with sensible, tactical minds are in a position to make such decisions. Otherwise the real fight comes when those whose opinions run contrary make the final call. It's quite the quandary should they be your belligerent coworkers, or worse, superiors.

That comes with the assumption they're clever enough to have thought of the notion. Or possess the disposition for following through on it. Although I do agree with the basic premise.

[Maybe it's for the best that text conversations aren't ideal for conveying scorn.]

You're certainly right that most people are more than happy to believe they're the masters of their own fate even while others are guiding them from the shadows.

I believe the key difference in whether that level of orchestration will work depends on if the players you're trying to lead are focused on the end result or here and now. Someone who thrives on exercising their power over others will not so easily relinquish their control, even for a short time. Unless of course they're trying a similar tactic on you.
