Easy AUing
Aug. 1st, 2021 12:14 pmJ'onn is very easy to fit into just about any universe, but here are some bits and pieces. I adjust the extent of his abilities to suit each scenario.
➣ At one point in canon J'onn wass the chairperson of The Totality, an organisation that monitors the multiverse, protecting the fabric of reality, maintaining proper timelines and exploring various realities. So, with no AUing at all, J'onn can be anywhere, anywhen.
➣ For almost any superhero universe, J'onn doesn't need any changes at all. Still an alien, last of his kind, transported to Earth, doing good things. If he's accepted as a champion or distrusted due to being an alien depends on the universe, really.
➣ For canons on an Earth without aliens, I usually play him as the only alien on the planet pretending to be human law enforcement. This was more or less his original depiction anyway. You can think of it as one of those detective shows where the main character has special abilities. Many of J'onn's stories revolve around setups like this, with him acting as a detective, PI, or international man of mystery.
➣ One of my favourite appearances of J'onn was in the 2008 Madam Xanadu series, which saw him in an urban fantasy setting, bafflingly everyone by still being an alien.
➣ For purely fantasy canons, I usually keep it vague as to if J'onn is a mystical being or still an alien and have him just describe himself as 'fallen from the sky', a phrase inspired by the Elseworld's Riddle of the Beast. Either he pretends to be a human or lives as an isolated being approached for help or hunted for his differences. He also makes a spiffy knight. There is also a stranger version, from League of Justice.
➣ For space-bound sci-fi, J'onn fits right in. I usually keep him as the last of his kind, travelling the universe to do good. He often takes the form of other species and keeps his true nature secret. Often a space cop. One future version of J'onn did exactly this. An alternative take on this could be J'onn as Space Ranger.
➣ J'onn makes an excellent ancient alien. His New 52/DCnU incarnation spent millions of years on Earth after the death of his people and in the post-crisis version, it was established that Martians lived on Earth in the ancient past.
